"Taking it All "

Chapter 24

Wu Fei yawned as he flipped the heater off. All the warm air in the small car was relaxing him a little too much. His eyes shifted toward the passenger seat, where a file and a disc laid in wait. It was already two in the afternoon, and Heero had yet to return to his apartment to begin getting ready for work that evening. Who would have ever guessed that Heero was a gay man? All this time, he had believed the Wing pilot to have been straight; but the uncovered evidence resting in the seat next to him proved otherwise.

From the corner of his eye, he saw Heero's car pull into the apartment parking lot. Thankfully, Trowa wasn't with him. The conversation that Wu Fei was intending to have with his coworker would go a little more smoothly if their mutual friend wasn't present. Grabbing the file and disc from the seat, Wu Fei turned off his car, then climbed out to meet Heero. The Japanese man appeared confused at Wu Fei's approach. Needless to say, the only time they ever saw each other was either at work, or a function that brought all the ex-pilots together.

"What are you doing here?" Heero wondered as he stopped a few feet from Wu Fei.

"We need to talk."

"I take it, that this is important?"

"Extremely." Heero's eyes darted toward the folder and slip case in Wu Fei's hand.

"Work related?"

"No. We probably shouldn't talk out here though." Heero nodded, and continued on his previous course toward the building. The small journey to Heero's apartment was in silence. It wasn't until they were well inside and both had shed their coats before Wu Fei spoke again. "Are you expecting Trowa anytime before you head to work?"

"No. He and Quatre have plans tonight. Why do you ask?"

"Because this concerns him." Heero stopped and spun to face Wu Fei.

"What's the deal?"

"Have you noticed that he's been acting strangely lately?" Heero relaxed at the question as he slumped onto the couch. At first, he was expecting something horrible; instead, Wu Fei seemed worried about what could be confused as pre-marriage jitters.

"You try planning a wedding for nearly a hundred people that you could care less about, and see how you react."

"I'm not talking about that. . .there's something more going on."

"What are you getting at?" Wu Fei sighed, wondering how to state what he came to say without sounding like a completely crazy person. Figuring that the direct way would probably work better with Heero, Wu Fei walked over to his comrade and dropped the folder on the coffee table before him. Heero studied the file a second before lifting his eyes toward Wu Fei for an explanation.

"Does he seem to not remember something that was important to the both of you?"

"Important, like what?" Heero opened the folder to expose pictures of him and Trowa. They must have been taken by Jade. The handwriting on the few notes inside were definitely not Wu Fei's.

"Like an affair?"

"These pictures are suppose to be proving an affair? Let me guess, Duo put you up to this. Nothing is going on between us Wu Fei, so you don't have to worry about my running their wedding."

"If what I think happen is true, I don't want this wedding to happen any more than you." This caught Heero's attention. He returned his gaze to Wu Fei just as the Chinese man placed the disc in Heero's player. A moment later, and a few scenes skips, the screen gave way to a familiar setting. Heero's eyes locked on the image. He and Trowa were making love in a motel room. Relief washed over him. There were times in the pass few days that he sometimes wondered if he had dreamed of the affair; as if it never happened. Now there was hard evidence that Trowa really did hold feelings toward him. "Were the two of you having an affair; or was the footage on this disc just a one night stand brought on by a drunken stupor?"

"Where the fuck did you get that?"

"Duo."

"What?!?"

"Recently, he's been buying pornos on the black market. Obviously, whatever motel you used seems to record its customers and transforms them into real live porn. Duo freaked out when he saw it. His bizarre logic figured that you and Trowa were drunk; or you were trying to prevent the wedding from happening." Heero picked up the remote from the coffee table and turned off the movie.

"We weren't drunk, and that happened before this whole engagement. . .but Trowa. . ."

"Doesn't remember."

"How do you know this stuff?"

"I knew something wasn't right with Tro. Before he left with Winner for Earth, he seemed a little confused about rather or not to continue with the relationship. He confided in me about having an affair with someone else, but I had no ideal that it was you. Up until yesterday night, I thought you were straight."

"Wait, Trowa told you?"

"He said that he needed an outside opinion. I thought for sure that he would have asked you first, but he somehow convinced me otherwise. He said you were too close to the situation."

"Why do you have Jade's file?"

"Curious, I guess. I seen her a couple of times at headquarters. So, when I saw the footage, I kind of figured that it wouldn't hurt to try digging a little deeper into the matter."

"I find it hard that she would just hand over this thing; especially the way Quatre is about covering up tracks."

"Well, she's out of town. More likely on another case."

"You helped yourself. So what prompt you to start this little investigation of yours?" That was the question that Wu Fei wasn't looking forward to answering. He sat in a chair and studied Heero, wondering how the information would be taken.

"I noticed the crystal that Trowa so recently started wearing."

"That cheap little piece of shit that Quatre bought for him in Paris?"

"That 'cheap little piece of shit' was bought before they went to Earth. . .and it's also the cause of Trowa's memory lost."

"Hn? How can a necklace cause that?"

"I didn't figure you the type to believe in supernatural happenings." Wu Fei leaned back and half covered his eyes with his left hand. Heero didn't need to know the full story of the crystal; so a bridged version was given instead. "It's called the Hybrid's Eye. Basically, when placed around a person's neck, it renders them into a trance like sleep for a couple of days. In those days, whoever placed the necklace whispers in their ear what they want them to forget. In this case, Winner wanted Trowa to forget your affair." He was afraid to look at Heero's reaction. Undoubtedly, Heero figured that Wu Fei had lost his mind. "There's a lot more to it, but that's pretty much the gist of it."

"So what happens if the necklace comes off? He suddenly remembers everything?"

"No. The effects are permanent. There's no way of regaining what was lost. And the only one that can remove it is Trowa. He'll have to want to take it off willingly and remember."

"What if I tried to rip it off, will I get shocked, the chain won't break, or something?"

"Are you mocking me?"

"No."

"Think about it logically for a second. If you rip it off, what will Trowa do? Place it on another chain. If you destroy it, then he'll be upset over it. No doubt, Winner gave him some sort of reason to want to wear it everyday. It'll be easier if he's convinced that he's been done wrong. Otherwise, he won't completely understand. That's why I came to you first."

"Quatre's unaware that you know."

"Correct."

"What happens if Trowa doesn't take it off?" Wu Fei closed his eyes as an image flashed before him. An image of a pair of coal eyes staring confusedly at him. Those eyes beheld him with such a lost gaze that it hurt him to remember them.

"Little by little, it'll tear at his memory. Then one morning, he'll wake up, and he won't remember what he did the day before. . .and it'll be that way for the rest of his life. Every morning, he won't remember a damn thing."

"How do you know that will happen?"

"Because I had to watch my mother go through it; everyday, without knowing why, until it was my turn to place it on someone's neck."

"Who did you-"

"I didn't. I couldn't put anyone through the hell that my mother went through; and I refuse to let it happen to Trowa."

"This thing came from your family."

"It was passed down for generations."

"How did Quatre get it?"

"My brother sold it to him."

"How much?"

"The cost of a new Colony." Heero sat back in the cushion while quietly being impressed that Quatre would spend so much to keep Trowa. Wu Fei was a bit surprised. Heero had taken the information a lot better than he expected. Then again, he probably had no other options to consider. Wu Fei's mumble jumble of the mystic world was the only lead that he had to go on.

"I guess the first step is to get the original footage from the motel."

"What about what we have?"

"Trowa won't accept just this. . .aside, the original had to capture the entire stay. There's a conversation that he might be interested in hearing. I'll get it, but you show it to him."

"Why not both of us?"

"Let's just say that he wouldn't fully believe it. Present it as a friend Wu Fei. Don't even mention that you consulted me at all. . . .just wait for my signal though."
